Samoan Epidemic gets worse with 25 people dead

On Monday, the authorities have said that an epidemic of measles which has been spreading across Samoa has worsened and the toll of people who have died due to the disease has gone on to be 25. All of them except for one are young children.

The authorities have released a video statement where they said that the problem is still big.

The video released by their director of health services has said that over 140 new cases have been recorded of people who have caught this disease. The total number of cases has now reached about 2,200 cases. Ever since the outbreak started last month, there have been close to 20 ill children. These children still are in the hospital in the ICU.

There was a declaration of state emergency nine days earlier as it closed all the schools and banned children from getting into public gatherings. There was also a mandate that all of them should be vaccinated. There are many teams of people who are traveling all over the country and making sure vaccines are administered.

There has also been the shutting down of a private clinic and investigations are on for how many vaccines have been taken without any approval from authority and then they are sold at a price.

The ones who have died are in the median age of 13 months as per the government figures. These deaths include 24 children who were under 5 years of age and 11 who were under the age of 12 months. The person who passed away besides these children was over 30 years of age.

Overall there have been 679 people who have been hospitalized in Samoa with the disease being the reason for 2/3rd of the admissions in hospital.
