CMS admin questioned over decline in enrollment for Medicaid

Seema Verma who is the administrator of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid was questioned on Wednesday over the agency’s efforts for undermining about Obamacare in Medicaid program. The program had showcased decline in enrollment during previous year as per some insurers who are stating that it is driving costs regarding medical treatment into the program.

Verma stated that the drop is noticed since most of the people have started to get health coverage from employer. During House Energy and Commerce Committee meet Verma stated that Medicaid programs tend to have enrollment fluctuations as America is a prosperous nation, thus there are a low percentage of people who are on and below poverty line and it has direct impact on Medicaid program.

Contrary to this, Rep. Joe Kennedy III stated that as per New England’s medicine journal there were thousands of citizens in Arkansas who lost their medical coverage because of recipients reporting requirements for the maintenance of the coverage. He further asked Verma whether she could showcase study which suggests that imposing policies over millions of citizens of US is a good decision.

To this Verma stated that it is premature to conclude anything about Arkansas at the present moment. After her statement Kennedy stated that 18,000 Americans have already lost healthcare coverage and for how long she will wait before making a determination.

Medicaid expansion is done to focus on working adults who were offered low wages and the coverage is offered since 2010. Health insurers were approached by states for proper management of those programs. At present, two insurers are stating that they are seeking greater turnover in those states which have placed the requirements for the implementation of new-work reporting. While talking to the press, Michael Neidorff stated that at present continuous decline in membership has been experienced due to re-determinations which caused acuity increase of remaining membership.
